SINTIHOTS Holds Its VII Consultative Council Session and Assesses Labour Conditions in the Hotel Sector
Maputo, 27 June 2025 – The National Union of Workers in the Hotel Industry, Tourism and Related Sectors (SINTIHOTS) held its VII Consultative Council Session this Friday at its national headquarters, located at Avenida Eduardo Mondlane, No. 1267, in the city of Maputo.
The meeting was opened by the Secretary for Trade Union Organisation, Dr Helena Pechisso, who emphasised that the main objective was to present the review of activities for June 2025, assess the current state of labour relations in the sector, and gather contributions from trade union representatives of various companies.
During the session, several concerns were raised by trade union secretaries and delegates, including:
- Disciplinary matters and labour inspection methods, including concerns about the calibration of equipment used to detect alcohol consumption while on duty.
- Management and worker dialogue issues, including reports of a lack of meetings, dismissals without staff replacement, and working hours considered unfair.
- Cases of disrespectful behaviour and misconduct by managers, including allegations of forced opening of lockers and unethical conduct.
- Significant salary payment delays at some companies, reaching up to two months, as well as irregular recruitment and dismissals.
- Replacement of permanent employees with interns and the imposition of penalties considered excessive for minor offences.
- Refusal to grant leave in circumstances provided for by law, such as in the case of employees about to get married.
Dr Helena Pechisso reaffirmed SINTIHOTS’ commitment to intervening with company management, scheduling institutional meetings and, where necessary, involving the Labour Inspectorate to ensure compliance with labour legislation.
The meeting concluded with confirmation that the VIII Consultative Council Session would take place on 31 July 2025, continuing efforts to monitor and defend the rights of workers in the hotel and tourism sector.
